T.A.S.T.E. Leadership Lessons #4 & #5

“The T.A.S.T.E. Leadership Model: Lesson #4 – TRUST!”

Trust: the essential bridge linking truth and teamwork to create results!

Maria Ressa, a Nobel Prize–winning journalist, wrote: “Without facts, you can’t have truth. Without truth, you can’t have trust. Without all three, we have no shared reality.”

That shared reality is TRUST!

In our three previous leadership lessons we discovered that…

• TRUTH grounds us,

• ACCOUNTABILITY aligns us,

• and SUPPORT strengthens us.

Together they create the foundation for TRUST!

When the leader is truthful, accountable, and supportive, trust becomes the catalyst for teamwork—the combined effort of people working toward a shared goal. For teamwork to thrive, team members must:

• Trust the leader’s decisions and direction.

• Trust each other to deliver results through mutual support

• And just as importantly, the leader must trust the team members.

This two-way trust is built on clear, consistent communication. The leader sets the goals, explains the path, and monitors progress—making small pivots as circumstances change. At the same time, team members must communicate openly about progress, problems, and opportunities.

In his book, “Thriving on Chaos,” Tom Peters suggests the leader use MBWA – Management by Walking Around. The best leaders regularly schedule time to meet and observe team members in action. That connection creates trust in each other.

To recap:

Without truth, there is no trust.

Without trust, teamwork fails.

With both, leaders and team members can achieve their shared goals.

That is today’s Morning Minute.

In Lesson #5, we’ll explore Empowerment.

“T.A.S.T.E. Leadership Model: Lesson #5 – EMPOWERMENT!”

Empowerment is intentional, life-changing, and essential to your team’s success!

How do you picture a great leader? Three questions reveal whether they empower others to be more, do more, and achieve more:

1. Are they invested in the success of both the team and each team member?

2. How does the team perform when the leader is absent?

3. Whom has the leader mentored who now leads their own successful teams?

Invested in Team Member Success:

A team can’t succeed unless its members grow in skill and knowledge. Great leaders recognize each member’s strengths, weaknesses, and abilities. They place people in roles that fit them best, expect excellence and continuous improvement, and cross-train to strengthen teamwork. In doing so, they invest in both individual growth and team success.

When the Leader is Absent:

An empowered team maintains momentum and productivity even in the leader’s absence. They hold themselves and each other accountable—because they’re invested in the team’s shared success.

Mentoring Other Leaders:

Legendary football coach Nick Saban is a prime example of this. He empowered assistants who went on to become head coaches—Kirby Smart, Lane Kiffin, Dan Lanning, Billy Napier, Steve Sarkisian, Mario Cristobal, Will Muschamp, Mark Dantonio, and Jimbo Fisher—building their skills to lead teams of their own.

Final Thought:

Henry Ford once shared: “The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave, is not training them and having them stay.” Empowered team members are vital for lasting success by growing your bench of future leaders.

Recapping the T.A.S.T.E. Leadership Model:

1. Truth grounds us.

2. Accountability aligns us.

3. Support strengthens us.

4. Trust connects us.

5. Empowerment transforms us.

Together, these five traits equip leaders to inspire teams, achieve results, and leave a lasting impact. In future challenge training we will go into greater detail on each trait.

That is today’s Morning Minute.
